Volunteering and Student Placement

General Volunteer Opportunities

From its inception, the Ragged School Museum has been about involving local people, and in no aspect of the organisation is this more important than our volunteers. Without them, we could not function.Volunteer helps student in Victorian classroom

We have over forty-five volunteers, aged from sixteen to over eighty, who partake in every aspect of the Museum’s work, from talking to school children and staffing our shop, to assisting in the office and working with our historical collections.

We are always ready to welcome new faces, and can offer a wide variety of activities to suit both your interests and your available time.

Regular social events and training sessions take place, and there are plenty of opportunities for our volunteers to try new things, meet new people and develop new skills.

If you are interested, please come along to the museum for an informal chat or telephone 020 8980 6405.

University Student Placement

Volunteer speaks to roomful of studentsEach year we invite several students to join us on our University Placement Scheme. They are expected to contribute to the administration and organisation of the museum, assisting both our staff and volunteers. In return, they gain valuable "hands on" experience of the daily life of a vibrant teaching museum and direct access to our collections.

As well as broadening and deepening their own education, our past Student Volunteers have found the experience both highly enjoyable and personally satisfying.

If you would like to be considered for a future placement, please contact our Director on 020 8980 6405.
